Description:
The first time we visited the south coast of Newfoundland was last fall, and we found it so beautiful that we decided to go again this year. The plan is to leave St. John's Monday morning and head south. After sailing about 80 miles along the edge of the majestic Grand Banks, where we might spot whales and icebergs, we will round Cape Race. Once we pass Cape Race it will feel like we have are in a different world; everything is welcoming, relaxed and above all less cold. After about 36 hours of sailing we will reach the south coast, and continue in day trips along the magnificent fjords of "Grey River", "Francois", "White Bear Cove" and many others. Most nights will be spent on anchor and during the day we will alternate sailing and hiking in the area.
A day to day schedule is difficult to make in advance. The daily activities will be decided day by day, depending on the weather. There is a lot of room for your own initiative! The general plan is to start with three days of non-stop sailing, until we reach the farthest point. From there we will sail back to St.John’s in short trips of 1-5 hours a day.
The south coast of Newfoundland is for the most part uninhabited. There are a few villages but barely any roads, therefore the only way to get there is by boat.
